Hello, friends!
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas filled with joy, love, and all the little things that make the season special. As we step into the New Year, I’m excited to share a fabulous cardmaking tutorial with you!
Using scrap strips of patterned paper is one of my favourite ways to create quick and beautiful card backgrounds, but why stop there? In this post, I’ll show you how to step up this simple technique by incorporating embossing.
With a mix of heat embossing for shine and embossing folders for texture, you’ll take your cards to the next level. For this project, I’m creating New Year’s cards, but this technique works beautifully for any theme or occasion.
What You’ll Need
Here’s a quick list of supplies to get started:
- Scrap strips of patterned paper
- Heat embossing tools (VersaMark ink, embossing powders, heat tool)
- Embossing folders and a die-cutting machine
- Adhesive, scissors, and card bases
- (Optional) Sentiment stamps or dies
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Arrange Your Scrap Strips
Start by selecting coordinating strips of patterned paper. Adhere them to a piece of cardstock, arranging them in any pattern you like—diagonal, horizontal, or even a mix!
2. Emboss Your Backgrounds
Once your strips are adhered, it’s time to emboss! Choose an embossing folder to add texture or use heat embossing to highlight specific areas with a touch of shimmer.
3. Add Embellishments
To finish your cards, layer on die-cut shapes, stamped sentiments, or other embellishments. This is where you can really let your creativity shine!
4. Assemble Your Cards
Attach your embossed panels to card bases, and you’re done. These cards come together quickly, making them perfect for mass production.
Why I Love This Technique
This method is not only a fantastic way to use up your scraps, but it also creates stunning, professional-looking cards. Combining embossing techniques adds so much depth and interest—it’s truly a game-changer!

P.S. I wanted to share something special with you! This Christmas, I created a heartfelt video as a gift for my dad. It was originally made for his eyes only, and I was nervous about sharing it beyond my immediate family. But they encouraged me to share it, and I’ve decided to do so – although I’ve kept the video unlisted. You can see it by clicking HERE. Please bear in mind, I’m clearly NOT a professional singer! This was created out of love and as a way to bring a smile to my dad’s face, and I hope it does the same for you too.
Hugs,
