5 Easy Staircase Cards Using Scrap Paper!

May 9, 2026 Leave a Comment

Hi friends!

Today I’m sharing one of the most fun cards I’ve made in a long time… these staircase cards are interactive, easy to customize, and such a great way to use up scrap paper!

Once I made the first one, I just kept coming up with more and more ideas for them! They’re one of those cards that look really impressive when they’re opened up, but they’re actually quite easy to make.

I also love that you can completely change the look depending on the papers and embellishments you use. I made several different versions, including floral, bright and cheerful, and even a Christmas version!

Here’s the video so you can see just how easy these are to put together:

Measurements for 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ Card:

You will need:

  • 2 inside folded pieces:
    • 5 1/4″ x 8 1/4″

Score along the 8 1/4″ side at:

  • 1 3/8″
  • 2 3/4″
  • 4 1/8″
  • 5 1/2″
  • 6 7/8″

Decorative Squares:

  • 1 1/4″ x 1 1/4″

These staircase cards are such a fun way to use up scraps and leftover patterned paper, and once I started decorating them, I honestly didn’t want to stop!

There are so many fun ways to decorate these cards using papers and supplies you already have in your craft room.

One thing to keep in mind with this style of card is embellishing. Since there are lots of layers and folds, the thicker the card becomes, the more expensive it may be to mail depending on where you live. The card above is one I’ll be hand-delivering to a friend, so I didn’t have to worry too much about the thickness once it was folded.

If you’re anything like me, you probably have lots of little leftover pieces of patterned paper that feel too pretty to throw away (which, who would actually DO THAT?)

This fold is absolutely perfect for using those smaller pieces because each little panel becomes its own tiny canvas.

You can mix florals, seasonal papers, stamping, sentiments, die cuts, or even photos.

I think these would be especially cute for:

  • Christmas countdown cards
  • Seasonal themes
  • Memory keeping
  • Grandchildren’s photos
  • Vintage-style papers
  • Masculine cards
  • Baby cards

There are so many possibilities with this design! I even pulled in the bruso pieces I recently created (which you can see HERE) to use on of these cards:

Can you imagine making these staircase cards using your masterboards? That would be brilliant. If you’ve not yet made a masterboard with your scrap-stash, learn how fun (and addictive) it is HERE.

Or what about using squares that each have a different embossing folder pattern? Oh my. And what if you took a really beautiful photo, or even a picture from a book or magazine, and cut THAT up into 1 1/4″ x 1 1/4″ squares? What about recycling old calendars, greeting cards, or even wrapping paper?

Oh Lord… now I need to go make MORE of these cards!!!!!

I hope this tutorial inspires you to pull out some of your scraps and give these staircase cards a try.

They’re relaxing to make, so much fun to decorate, and a wonderful way to use supplies you already have in your craft room. If you make one, I’d love to hear what theme or papers you would use!

Have a FABULOUS weekend and HAPPY STAMPING!

I joined Stampin' Up! the first night they arrived in Canada, April 2002, and what a ride it's been! At the time I just wanted the discount on all of the fabulous stamps and accessories - why pay full price if you don't have to, right? But little did I know where my journey with Stampin' Up! would take me. Read More…
