ALL THINGS CRAFTY | Must-Haves for Your Creativity
Hi Friends! I’m so excited to introduce you to a new monthly blog hop called “Around the World on Wednesday”. This blog hop is the brainchild of Angie McKenzie and I was honoured that she invited me to join. Members in this special blog hop are from every time zone in the Stampin’ Up! markets; pretty cool, right? So of course, I’m representing Nova Scotia, Canada.
The general theme for our first blog hop is “All Things Crafty”, with a focus on our “Must Have” Stampin’ Up! products. Well, that was a tough one, because I create with so many items in my craft room. But if I were stranded on a deserted island and could only have certain products, I’d have to choose my aqua painters, Jet Black Stazon ink pad, stamps and (are you ready for it?) – my Pigment Sprinkles. So why the Pigment Sprinkles, you may ask? For a few reasons, actually.
- Pigment Sprinkles are perfect for travelling & don’t take up much space. They come six to a box, with a fabulous assortment of colours: Bermuda Bay, Granny Apple Green, Melon Mambo, Mango Medly, Daffodil Delight and Gorgeous Grape. Of course, those colours can be mixed to create an even larger assortment of colours.
- I LOVE love love mixed media and these powders are ideal for so many art techniques.
- I can shake a tiny amount of the Pigment Sprinkles onto a palette and use my aqua painter to pick up colour – perfect for watercolouring stamped images!
- The Pigment Sprinkles make amazing backgrounds when spritzed with water – or even with a few swipes of the wet aqua painter.
- Pigment Sprinkles can be mixed in with texture/embossing paste!
- Did you know that you can even STAMP with pigment powders? Sprinkle a bit onto a stamp, mist with water, press onto card stock! Or, mix a bit of water with the pigment sprinkles and apply to a stamp with aqua painter.
- Pigment Sprinkles are terrific for the “Baby Wipe Technique”!
As you can see, Pigment Powders are incredibly versatile. Another reason why I love these powders so much is that every time I use them, especially on mixed media projects, I completely get into my ‘groove’ and I find it incredibly relaxing (in other words I take a trip to the crafter’s ‘vortex’ and lose all track of time). For me, it’s absolutely PLAY time! Speaking of ‘playtime’, here are some cards I made using the Pigment Sprinkles, my aqua painter and the “Seaside Notions” stamp set:
I made a few variations using a couple different techniques with the Pigment Sprinkles, and even the type of paper I used. Let me walk you through the cards and the details for each one:
“With Gratitude”
- This was a simple card and I wanted to show how one can control the amount of “Pigment Sprinkles” used on a card by turning them into ‘watercolours’.
- I lightly tapped each colour of the six Pigment Sprinkles onto a styrofoam plate, added a couple drops of water (remove the lid of aqua painter and squeeze out water). I now had a palette of colours to create with for ALL my cards!
- I picked up the colour with my aqua painter and coloured in all my stamped images, adding more colour after each layer dried.
- Cardstock: Whisper White
- Ink Pad: Black Stazon
- Other Details: a little Dazzling Diamonds Glitter was added to the ‘dots’ image and a bit of Silver Glimmer paper underneath the sentiment stepped this simple card up a bit.
“Thinking of You” Gold Embossed Card
- Ok, I couldn’t resist a little heat embossing with my Pigment Sprinkles, so I’ll have to add my Versamark, heat tool, embossing buddy and few emboss powders to my “MUST HAVES” list!
- I created the background by misting first with water then I added a bit of the “Bermuda Bay” pigment sprinkles, followed with some “Granny Apple Green”.
- To move some of the colour, I just used my aqua painter to blend, then I set the card stock aside to dry naturally.
- Once dry, I rubbed the embossing buddy over the card stock, stamped my images with Versamark and sprinkled with Gold Emboss Powder and set with my Heat Tool.
- I used my aqua painter to splatter water onto the card later.
- Cardstock: Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper
- Other Details: I used Bermuda Bay and Granny Apple Green Pigment Sprinkles for the background. To finish the card, I added a light spritzing of Champagne Mist Shimmer Paint (to see how to make this, click here).
“Happy Birthday” Black Embossed on Whisper White Card
- I rubbed the embossing buddy over the watercolor paper and stamped the images with Versamark. Next, I sprinkled on the black emboss powder and set with heat tool.
- Before I added colour with the Pigment Sprinkles, I added a light layer of water around the stamped image with my aqua painter (working in small sections at a time). This helps with the ‘flow’ of the pigments when I brush them on and also helps keep the colour outside the lines of the stamped images.
- I used my aqua painter to add a light wash of Bermuda Bay Pigment Sprinkles to the card, followed with some Granny Apple Green. I picked up the colour, which I had mixed with water, from my styrofoam plate.
- I added more washes of colour, as each layer of the Pigment Sprinkles dried.
- Once the stamped piece was dry, I added splatters of water using the aqua painter.
- Cardstock: Whisper White, Basic Black
- Other Details: because the Pigment Sprinkles were applied to Whisper White card stock, I was very careful not to add too much water to the paper. Less is best, and then more colour added once cardstock dried. I mounted the stamped piece on a layer of fun foam and then adhered to the card base. A spritz of the champagne shimmer mist paint to finish.
“Happy Birthday” Black Embossed on Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper
- This card was done exactly the same as above card, except I used Watercolour Paper and embossed with Black Emboss Powder.
- The Pigment Sprinkles are much more intense on the watercolour paper!
- Using the Watercolour paper also allows for more movement of the Pigment Sprinkles and the results are fantastic!
- Cardstock: Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper
- Other Details: this card makes me happy.
“Happy Birthday” White Embossed on Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper
- This card was done exactly the same as above card, except I embossed the stamped images with White Emboss powder.
- Cardstock: Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper
- Other Details: I mounted the stamped piece onto fun foam before adhering to the card base. This raises it a bit higher on the card front too. This, and the above card, are my favourites!
